-There are many scheduled events in Venezia, from the Biennale held [of course] every second year, in the 'odd years' [2013, 2015, 2017 etc.] through to music and opera at the Fenice, art shows, masked balls and the like. There are too many to list individually so, to get an up-to-date list, [thanks to Venezia Unica] simply click on the 'Calendar of Events' button on the left.

I was in Venezia for both the 2013 and 2015 exhibitions. I'm a bit of a 'non-arty' person [for want of a better description]. In 2013 I sort-of drifted around some of the exhibitions and was frequently underwhelmed by what I saw ... "what were they thinking?", ... "art?' ... and so on....
In 2015 I 'made the effort' and visited ALL of the pavilions at both Giardini and Arsenale. Just click on the 'My Biennale' button on the left to see some of the exhibits. My experience was a little different the second time around. On a few occasions I think I may have seen / understood what the artist was trying to convey. That said, I remain somewhat of an art cynic, as you will no doubt conclude if you review the segment on Peggy Guggenheim's place on the Grand Canal. By way of mitigating my somewhat cynical view of what constitutes art you may wish to view an article appearing in the Huffington Post - "Yes, Art Is Boring Sometimes, But Maybe That's A Good Thing" My jury is still out on this one! |
Chiesa di San Vidal
Campo di San Vidal 2862 Venezia I have never been a classical music enthusiast - some pieces are quite fantastic but the overall 'thing' is often way beyond me ... sort-of in line with my comments above about art .... THEN a friend in Venezia went to a Vivaldi "Le Quattro Stagioni" evening [The Four Seasons, of course] in 2014. I went along the next night and just loved it. I went again again in 2016 and loved it all over again. Just fantastic!! I can't recommend it highly enough. The exterior of the church is quite unprepossessing yet the interior is spectacular, with great acoustics. Peggy Guggenheim Collection
Dorsoduro, 701-704, 30123 Venezia Yes, I'm a Philistine!! This is my third admission on this page that I know nothing about art .... and I can confidently say that following my visit to this exhibition I know even less than that!
I'm in the category of 'I don't know art but I know what I like'. I struggled! This picture on the left is titled 'Horse' ..... I still don't know if it's meant to be a headless horse, or a horseless head! A blue rectangle superimposed on a larger red rectangle ... or was it vice-versa ... why? The blue image on the left was for me the most impressive thing there and that was more about the setting than the contents. It is a photo I took through a window showing the Grand Canal in the background ... something with which I could identify [perhaps that's it??] My journey towards enlightenment continues, albeit haltingly .... |
My opinion, of course, is contrary to the vast majority of reviewers on TripAdvisor. I'm slightly of the view that some people believe that because so many other people think something is highly regarded they should rate it that way too! Sheep! They're just being conformist! That said, it was interesting, if only for the opportunity to observe other people seeing things as interesting ... or were they?? See the Huffington Post Australia article dd December 2015 that may be relevant .

I have stayed here on three separate occasions, once with family, and highly recommend this B&B. Damiano and his father, Nico, run the place well, with a friendly disposition, comfortable beds, a great location ... and a huge breakfast. It really is very well done.

This wine bar is immediately opposite the B&B accommodation I stayed at on my first night in Venezia in 2013. It is nice and familiar and I visit there every time I am in Venezia. I regularly take friends and fellow students along to enjoy it all. When I first arrived at the I asked Damiano at the B&B whether there was a wine bar nearby - he just smiled, beckoned me over to the door and escorted me the two paces [literally] to all'Amarone! The service, the snacks, the wine, the atmosphere ... just great!

Al Todaro Café, Snack Place, and Ice Cream Shop ·
San Marco 3, Venezia Opposite the columns across from the Doges Palace. This is where I go whenever I feel like a bit of cioccolata calda, a real self indulgence. It's a little pricey, but also part of l'esperienza Veneziana... and it's surprising just how often one needs hot chocolate!! |
