Giudecca Island
Home of Redentore

Giudecca Island

I refer to Giudecca as the 'dormitory island' - it is the equivalent of suburbia for Venezia. Many local people actually live on the island and commute to the tourist/business areas. It is this 'local' presence that helps accounts for the generally lower prices. It is further away from the 'tourist traps' and prices generally reflect this.

The accommodation provided via the Istituto is located on Giudecca so I have spent many nights on the island. It is rather easy to find your way around and the waterfront is a particularly nice stroll. There are wine bars and restaurants along the way, ranging quite widely in price. You can enjoy a wine at the wine bars, have a sit-down meal or wander further along to the Hilton Molina Stucky.

If you are staying at the student accommodation it is a good idea to get an understanding where the supermarkets are ... see the section below - i Supermercati..
You can reach the island from Piazzale Roma and from the railway station by public waterbus/ferry [vaporetto]:
  • ACTV Line #41 or #2 in the direction of Giudecca [the return trip is served by #2 and #42]:

There are three stops on the island:
  • Palanca [the main stop];
  • Redentore [near the big Redentore Church and the disembarkation point for students staying at the 'Forestiere Redentore];
  •  Zitelle.

The #4 and #42 waterbuses run every 20 minutes during daytime until 9 pm and the #2 runs all day every 10 minutes and at different frequencies; the "N" line is active in both directions during the night

Private Water Taxi
The Giudecca island is easily reached from the Zattere stop via the #2 waterbus. If you only cross the Giudecca canal, that is,  from Zattere to the Palanca stop [or vice-versa], you pay half the ticket [ask for a "traghetto" ticket] because it is one stop only.

From the airport you have two main options:
  • Alilaguna boat service, running about every half an hour
  • Private water taxi

Because there are so many locals on the island prices are somewhat lower and there are supermarkets servicing the community at those lower prices.

On stepping off the Zattere to Redentore ferry you will notice the 'Prix' supermarket. [pronounced as it is spelt - this is Italy, not France]. There is a reasonable selection and the place is filled with locals, so prices are good.

Calle Michelangelo
Giudecca 541
From the Zitelle stop turn right. DO NOT walk up the Calle Michaelanglo in front of you. Walk past the three shop windows and turn left into what looks like an open courtyard. Walk straight through here and you will find yourself on the other part of Calle Michelangelo. It is the second alimentari on the left.

This 'watering hole' has been my favourite hang out on Giudecca. I/We/our group discovered it on my/our first visit in 2013 and for my recent visits have frequented it, well.... .... frequently!! It is situated on the Giudecca canal, just down from the Palanca ferry stop and is very convenient. Home to the Forestiere accommodation is a pleasant 10 minute walk, crossing only two pedestrian bridges that are somehow simpler on the way to Botti than they are on the return journey home. The food is of a good standard and the drinks are not expensive. There are many local characters present and you get the feeling that this is a more authentic Venezia than the tourist-laden Piazza S. Marco, Rialto and 'ritzy' areas. The views are across to the Grande Canale area and the light shows off the water and the coming-and-goings of the ferries are just magical.

OK, I didn't actually stay here but on two occasions walked in as if I DID, and went to the top floor and nursed a single drink long enough to get the sunset photos.
